Professional Farriers and Farrier's Formula®

Several years ago I was faced with an appaloosa gelding about 7 years old with extremely poor feet. The hoof walls were torn out at least an inch up the wall where the nails would usually be seated. The feet were extremely dry, and fibrous tubules were peeling off the hoof in great numbers. The horse was sore on his feet, and his owner had, for the previous two years, tried several farriers in an attempt to right this animal. Due to the problems with his feet and the discomfort of any shoeing procedure, the horse’s attitude towards shoeing was less than desirable and sedating was required to do work on him.

After examining the horse and consulting with the client, I did two things—I shod the horse with handmade shoes 5/16 x ¾ stock with quarter clips on all four feet, and relocated nails to wherever I could find a solid purchase, and I instituted a rigid regimen of Farrier’s Formula® at double the recommended dose daily. We made an appointment to see the horse again in six weeks.

At the six week appointment, the customer was amazed. Her horse had never been pain free nor had been able to hold shoes for that length of time and there was a slight improvement to the hoof walls and general overall hoof condition. We reshod the horse in the same manner and continued the double dose of Farrier’s Formula®. By the third shoeing, 12 weeks from the initial contact, there was a great improvement to the texture and coloring of the hoof. It was now more elastic, less brittle, but firming up, and its coloration was creamier and richer looking, indicating improved health.

The fourth visit, the horse’s attitude was improving. We were able to simply cross-tie him, and it was not necessary to sedate him. The condition of the feet now showed marked improvement. The horse was reduced to a “regular” dose of Farrier’s Formula® for his size. He continues with this regimen to this day.

This is just one of many cases I’ve come across where the marriage of good shoeing practice with the supplementation of Farrier’s Formula® results in vastly improved hoof health.

Last year, Equine Vet, Dr. George Platt, called me to work on a foundered brood mare at a barn that raises cutting horses. We found that the other horses also seemed to be sore footed. As a matter of fact, we found all the horses we examined to have very thin soles.

We shod the foundered mare with heart bar shoes and resected the front of both feet and put her on a high dosage of Farrier’s Formula® to stimulate increased growth rate and strengthen the hoof wall.

By approximately 3 months, I noticed her soles were considerably thicker and tougher than the other horses in the barn. We also used Life Data’s Hoof Antiseptic in conjunction with Farrier’s Formula® to help toughen the soles.

The only horse that could tolerate the sharp rock on soft feet with minimal ill effects was the horse we had on Farrier’s Formula®.

Horse owners and Farrier's Formula®

I just wanted to take a few moments to let you know how happy I am with Farrier’s Formula®. I began feeding Farrier’s Formula® to my quarter horse a year ago because he had weak, brittle hooves. Well, I have not been disappointed. His hooves are much healthier and stronger now.

The true test of how well your product has worked for my horse came about two weeks ago. I had just returned from a 20-mile trail ride that, at times, was very rocky and very muddy. Upon my return, I noticed that he had lost his front shoe. I don’t know when it happened, I can only guess he lost it in a deep mud hole we went through and that was about 7 miles back! I was scared to look at the condition I was going to find his hoof in. To my surprise and relief, only a small piece had broken off, which was probably due to the shoe being pulled off. I am absolutely certain that had it not been for Farrier’s Formula®, his hoof would have been all broken apart and he would definitely have been lame.

As it turned out, all I needed to do was to have the farrier replace the lost shoe and he was as good as gold!

In December of last year, I started using your Farrier’s Formula® product on an 18 year-old thoroughbred gelding who all of his life has had soft, shelly hooves that would not hold shoes. After only a little less than 4 months on Farrier’s Formula®, there is now ½ to ¾ of an inch new hoof growth. It’s a slow process, but this is a horse that never grew a hoof or what he did grow broke off. I have also had to cut back on his grain as he is getting a bit overweight, and he has never had that problem before. This stuff is great! I would really be interested in information on becoming a dealer for your products as I am a firm believer in Farrier’s Formula®. This product really works!

I am writing this letter in regards to your Farrier’s Formula®. I have had horses now for over 30 years and this is the first time that I have used a supplement that really works. My Saddlebred has had a cracked foot now for over three years now. The crack comes out of the coronet band and goes down to the bottom of the foot. I have tried everything, even soaking the foot and keeping it moist.

My blacksmith went to a symposium down in Kentucky and said that they were raving about this Farrier’s Formula® nutritional supplement. He suggested we give it a try as nothing else seemed to work. Well, when I saw what the results were, I was truly amazed! In just seven weeks, my horse grew a healthier foot and the crack is completely gone out of the coronet band. All that’s left are the remains of the old crack, which will be trimmed away with the next shoeing.

My blacksmith has since started five other problem-footed horses in our barn on it and I am confident they will have the same results. Thank you for such a wonderful product.

I recently read testimonials on your Farrier’s Formula® and it occurred to me that our use really proves its usefulness.

Our gelding, who was born on May 9, 1981, is still in great use. His dam was out of a “Standard-bred mare” and his sire was an Appaloosa. We had purchased the young stallion in New Mexico and bred him to our mare. Apparently bad feet came through this cross.

When “Lee” was six we noticed a shoe retention problem as we rode and drove him. By seven years, we could not keep shoes on and took him to the Rochester Equine Clinic in New Hampshire. They first wired a crack and then pared down the front feet until there was no remaining shell. We kept him in a stall for a year (our horses are usually out and under a shed all year).

During his confinement, in the late ‘80s, we learned of Farrier’s Formula® from a friend and in 1988 started with its use. We were given advice along the way by Dr. Gravlee and when his feet grew out in the spring of ’89, we had him shod and from that day on have had no problem as we rode, drove, and then grove him double with his half-Thoroughbred brother.

We had a wagonette made in 1992 and have driven the pair 8,000 miles through the Vermont hills. Lee is now 21 and keeps shoes on 7 or 8 weeks even though he also runs in pasture. Thanks, Dr. Gravlee; 14 years of use so far of our old friend.
